Deputy Roger L. Treadway
End Of Watch: 10/08/1975
Deputy Treadway was shot and killed after he and his partner stopped to assist what they believed
to be a disabled motorist on US Route 60 in the area of Lavista. The driver of the vehicle had the hood up and was acting
as if he was working on the engine.
As Deputy Treadway and his partner approached the vehicle the man pulled a shotgun
from under the hood and opened fire, striking both deputies. Deputy Treadway and his partner returned fire, wounding the suspect.
All three were transported to a local hospital, where Deputy Treadway succumbed to his wounds. The suspect died four days
later. Later investigation revealed that the suspect had earlier murdered his family in Covington, Virginia, and was
fleeing the scene.
